Plot: After she researches a potential story about a predatory lesbian nurse that turned out to be a cannibal, intrepid news reporter Emanuelle (Laura Gemser) decides to follow the cannibalistic trail all the way to the Amazon. She seduces Professor Lester (Gabriele Tinti) to ensure he accompanies her and given that the duo is seeking out the last of the cannibal tribes, that extra incentive was likely deserved. Once the pair arrives in the dense jungle, the hunt for the cannibal tribe begins, but not before they’re joined by a few new friends. A nun, a missionary’s daughter, and jungle guides are now part of the crew and if Emanuelle hopes to survive this vacation, let alone find the lost tribe, she will need all the help she can get.
Entertainment Value: Laura Gemser, cannibals, and a whole lot of jungle fuckin’ can be found in Joe D’Amato’s Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals, with an emphasis on sleaze over the usual cannibal violence. The movie still has some eye popping bloodshed of course, but the focus is on the sex and this one isn’t as dark as most cannibal epics. The tone is more on the campy side for the most part, with some more tense scenes at times and the cannibals are by no means pacifists here. The story is of course ludicrous and just sets up the jungle sex and cannibals, but it is a lot of fun and has some oddball moments, to be sure. The movie isn’t as gritty or rough in terms of visuals as some cannibal movies, but outside of the sex scenes the camera work gets a little more in line with the genre. The cast has several familiar faces, including legend Laura Gemser who is the main draw here and shines in her role, as usual. The performances are overall on the wooden side, but I appreciate the stilted dialogue and awkward moments and the cast is on point when the clothes come off. In short, this one has all you could want from an erotic jungle shuffle with cannibals, sleaze, gore, and one of the all time greats in Laura Gemser.
Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals is packed with sleaze, with frequent, full, and vivid nudity on showcase. The women here are naked most of the time, with breasts, asses, and remarkable bush all on display, while the men are a little more modest, without such graphic flesh visible. The lesbian sex scenes are the most involved, while the male/female ones are more tame, but still show off the naked bodies. There’s also some humorous things that unfold in and around the sex scenes at times, which I will cover in the craziness section. This movie isn’t as gore drenched as some cannibal flicks, but there’s still some fun, often outlandish bloodshed involved. The animal related violence is dialed way down, which is a welcome shift, while the general gore is splashy, but not as over the top and vivid. The highlights include booby traps, a man wrenched in half, cannibal munch sessions, and of course, a nipple banquet. The dialogue here is on the goofier side, thanks to some odd dub choices, but never feels super wild or ridiculous. Even so, it is also never dull or forgettable. As for craziness, we have a monkey smoking while he watches naked women bathe each other, gun induced masturbation, nipple craving cannibals, a never ending desire to fuck in the jungle, and a general campiness that ensures things always feel at least a little wild.
Overall Insanity: 7/10
