Plot: Dr. Sharon (Yvette Yzon) endured some horrific things on an island packed with the living dead, but she survived and escaped. After a helicopter rescue, she recovers and tries to tell her tale to anyone who will listen, but she is dismissed as unstable and no one believes her. But she knows the immense danger that looms, should those undead hordes ever make it off the island, so she continues to warn others. After a while, she flees to a Buddhist monastery, where she seeks inner peace and serenity, only to be visited by someone from the same organization that refused to believer her claims. Now she has a chance to help wipe out the zombie menace, with the help of a highly trained, well armed militia of skilled soldiers. Even the soldiers seem hesitant to believe they’re about to battle zombies, but those doubts are soon erased when they come face to face with the undead. But can the island’s vicious living dead ever truly be conquered, or is there more to the undead than anyone realizes?

Entertainment Value: This was the final movie from genre legend Bruno Mattei, a swan song that rips off Aliens wholesale, trading in the xenomorphs for zombies. This is also a sequel to Island of the Living Dead, though it does manipulate some of the events from that movie, in order to keep Dr. Sharon alive. This one starts off slow, then builds toward an insane conclusion that sends off Mattei’s immortal cinematic career in grand style. I don’t think the slow start hurts the movie however, as it still has odd moments and some awful dub work, including performances that would feel right at home in regional dinner theater. Sharon’s voice actress is simply ridiculous, with great dramatic pauses in all the wrong places throughout the movie. The rest of the dub work is almost as weird, so even routine scenes have that offbeat edge. Once the movie builds some steam, it rockets into madness and crash lands in a finale that needs to be seen to be believed. I mean, just the Aliens rip-off elements provide immense entertainment, let alone all the gore, child zombies, and moon-shot level overacting from the voice talent. Mattei is one of my favorite directors and watching his final movie again was bittersweet, but he went out on a proper note, a true trash epic.

A lot of naked zombies, topless corpses, and the like, mostly smeared in subpar makeup, so not much eroticism. But a point is still in order, since breasts are breasts, even the undead ones. A lot of sloppy bloodshed however, with zombie attacks, bite wounds, gun wounds, limbs torn off, bodies cleaved in twain, and a blood soaked midget zombie who seems super pissed off. Then there’s all the makeup, as a lot of zombies are here and those little kid zombies, with their coneheads and insect eyes are an especially horrible creation. The dialogue is outlandish, made all the more over the top by the absolutely maniacal dubbed voice performances. Sharon is the worst offender, but they all have odd phrasing, strange pauses, and sudden shifts in tone, just wild and hilarious stuff that really adds to the fun. I almost did this entire review two words at a time, as a tribute to the goddess Sharon. In the realm of craziness, a total hijack of Aliens that uses zombies has to earn some points on premise alone, let alone the other weird shit that creeps into this one. The zombie midget, zombie children, laughable voice work, vacuum hose birth canal, talking brain (!), and more kick up to the wackiness. Not Mattei’s most insane work, but some solid craziness here.
