Plot: A plane suddenly goes down in a suburban area, crashing to the ground and grinding through houses. The plane slows and finally stops, only to explode shortly after and burst into massive flames. All of the passengers and crew were killed in the tragic event, except for one, the plane’s pilot, Keller (Robert Powell). He is alive, but riddled with guilt over the crash and desperate to learn why it happened. Keller is also haunted by strange visions, while at the same time, a psychic named Hobbs (Jenny Agutter) can feel the victims reach out from beyond the grave. Soon people connected to the crash site start to turn up dead, often from violent events. Hobbs reaches out to Keller, who can’t remember the crash, as she knows the spirits want his involvement. Will anything satiate these tormented spirits and what will happen to Keller and Hobbs?
Entertainment Value: More suspense thriller than horror, The Visitor has a lot of tension and atmosphere. Not to mention the insane opening sequence, which presents a stunning plane crash in vivid detail. The pace moves at a slow burn after the crash, building tension that ratchets up scene after scene. That slow pace is going to throw off some viewers, especially those expecting a more traditional horror experience. I never found the film dull, but it does drag in places, though this isn’t frequent. The story is solid and the cast is terrific, with Robert Powell and Jenny Agutter in prime roles. Powell displays the confusion and frustration you’d expect, but Agutter carries the film with a skilled turn that embraces the supernatural side of The Survivor. The tone of the film is dead serious and the performances reflect that. I also found the music to be such a great fit for the material. A little slow perhaps, but The Survivor is a solid suspense thriller with a little supernatural fun thrown in.
No one gets naked. There are several scenes of violence, but the bloodshed happens mostly off screen. What we do get to see isn’t really graphic, but it is still nice to have some red stuff around. This is more suspense driven than horror, I mentioned above, which meshes with the low levels of blood. There are some good burned up corpse effects and a creepy burned doll, so enjoy those. This is well written, dead serious movie and as such, not much for memorable lines. The Survivor isn’t insane in the usual ways, but it does earn some points for the incredible plane crash and the unnerving atmosphere present throughout.
Nudity: 0/10
Blood: 2/10

Overall Insanity: 2/10
