Plot: A model has just found out she has a huge cover shoot booked, so of course she wants to look her best. She heads to a fitness club and hops in a tanning bed, but she winds up crispier than desired. The bed malfunctions and as a result, the beautiful girl is cooked alive. Years later at Rhonda’s Workout, the young and attractive (and one fat guy) work out, tone their bodies, and of course, hook up for fun. But then a young girl is stabbed to death in the shower, with a huge safety pin, no less. Rhonda (Marcia Karr) tries to keep the incident quiet, but patrons learn about the death and don’t seem all that shaken. Assigned to the murder case is Lt. Morgan (David Campbell), a no nonsense detective who is determined to put the killer behind bars. The bodies keep piling up, though Morgan was mere seconds from capturing the killer mid-murder. Morgan suspects the new gym employee who showed up as the killings started, but who is really behind this spree of carnage?

Entertainment Value: Killer Workout is an 80s slasher that was shot on video, the kind of horror movie that inspires nostalgia and high VHS prices on eBay. This movie is all 80s, with all the trimmings you could want from that decade. The cheese pop, the outfits, the hair, and the dialogue, its all here and its all magical. I know a lot of genre fans sleep on Killer Workout, but I think its a fun movie. The story is passable and has some nice twists, while the cast is…well, what you’d expect. Genre favorite Ted Prior is a highlight and has some great moments, not to mention the fights. The martial arts clashes in Killer Workout are simply hilarious and so much fun. Prior has a few nice fights and even gets hit by a car, so he delivers the kind of action his fans expect. There is also a cornucopia of beautiful 80s women, so the casting is appropriate. Killer Workout has some slow stretches, but is still fun and offers up solid entertainment. Fans of shot on video 80s horror will be glad to add this to their collections.

Despite a cast that is overloaded with hot 80s females, Killer Workout doesn’t have that much nudity on show. A few girls drop top to show us the twins, but the views are brief and infrequent. But hey, some jugs are better than no jugs, right? And if you like women in 80s workout attire, you’ll be in heaven with numerous lingering scenes of women doing various aerobics. And some dudes in ball hugging short shorts are here, if you’re into that kind of fun. The movie has a high body count and a good amount of blood, though few of the killings are graphic or inventive. Most are performed with a giant safety pin (seriously), but there are some other deaths as well. So a decent variety of slaughter with some solid spurts of the red stuff, keeping genre fans pleased. Not many memorable lines, but the performances are and that balances things out. Killer Workout is a straight ahead slasher with a freaky twist, so I wouldn’t rank it high on the insanity chart. But it is still a fun slice of 80s horror cinema, but it needs to remember that if you want to mop the floor, you might want some water in the bucket.
