Plot: Larry (Peter Fonda) has dreams of being the best race car driver in the world, but he lacks the funds to acquire a vehicle worthy of his skills. Along with his mechanic Deke (Adam Roarke), Larry comes up with a plan to hold the wife and child of a market manager hostage and ask a high ransom. The plan is a precise one, as they will strike just after the bank truck drops off the store’s cash for the week. The heist goes off well, but the two wind up with less lead time than expected. And when Larry’s one night stand from the night before, Mary (Susan George) shows up, things spiral out of control. The police are in hot pursuit, but the trio has a little head start and thanks to a police band radio, they can keep tabs on what the fuzz are up to. A lawman of a unique, outside the box stripe is soon on the case however, while Larry and Mary argue non stop about everything under the sun. With internal conflicts erupting and a driven police force on their tail, will these daredevil criminals be able to keep their freedom and newfound wealth?
Entertainment Value: The title sounds like a porno, but Dirty Mary Crazy Larry is all about car chases and Susan George. George plays the bratty girl to perfection here, which means she is equal parts adorable and annoying. She and Peter Fonda have good chemistry and their back-and-forth exchanges are fun to watch. Vic Morrow also adds to the fun as an obsessed, over the top lawman. The story is fine and makes sense, so combined with the good cast, the movie is rock solid. The attitude and atmosphere are pure 70s, from the clothes to the dialogue. The movie has that chase feel you’d expect, coming out of the gate fast and never really slowing down. At the same time, time is also taken to give some depth to the characters, so there is some substance. Dirty Mary Crazy Larry is a wild, fun movie that holds up well and entertains throughout.
No nudity, though there a shower scene where you can see a naked woman behind of those frosted shower doors. No real blood either, but what Dirty Mary Crazy Larry does have is awesome car chases. And unlike some movies that promise the world and only deliver one or two scenes, this movie is packed with car stunts. You’ll see countless cars wrecked and toppled in grand fashion, one after another. A highlight for me was a pursuit where the cop was talking epic trash, but there are a lot of great moments here. I mean, a helicopter rams a car at high speed, what else could you ask for? This movie is a gold mine for great lines too, mostly from Fonda and George. The two have some arguments laced with memorable dialogue, while Vic Morrow provides some good lines as well. You have to give Dirty Mary Crazy Larry some crazy points given the wealth of car stunts involved, but the story is fairly grounded outside of the chases. Even so, between the wild stunts and awesome finale, it earns its keep.
Nudity: 0/10
Blood: 0/10
