Story: Casey (Beau Mirchoff) had a bright future at one point, but a streak of bad luck has landed him in a life of crime. He serves as the leader of sorts of a heist crew and while they’ve been able to pull off some robberies, their latest operation proves to be a disaster. A pair of police officers manages to interrupt the heist, as Detective Knight (Bruce Willis) and his partner Detective Fitzgerald (Lochlyn Munro) walk right into the middle of the crime. This leads to a confrontation and violence erupts, leaving Fitzgerald shot numerous times and Casey’s crew on the run, not to mention Knight looking for vengeance. But can Knight manage to not only track down the crew to settle the score, but outmaneuver a potential saboteur within the police force?
Entertainment Value: Detective Knight: Rogue kicks off a trilogy of Bruce Willis crime driven action/thrillers and while this has the usual hallmarks of Willis’ direct to video output, I thought this was at least interesting and had some fun moments with the movie icon. The narrative is solid and kept me tuned in, surpassing my expectations and even making me look forward to the sequels. I did have low expectations of course, given some of Willis’ later work can turn out to be rather bland and forgettable, but Detective Knight: Rogue manages to rise above most of its peers in that sense. Willis is well used, rattling off some one liners and even nailing a clutch monologue, but the action is handled by his costars when it happens. There isn’t a lot of action and the pace is a little slow at times, while some of the performances fall rather flat as well. So this is inconsistent, but for fans of Willis or direct to video b movies, Detective Knight: Rogue is a decent watch.
This is another direct to video Bruce Willis flick and this time around, he does have a decent amount of screen time and factors into the main narrative. The filmmakers were able to make the most of Bruce’s presence, while also masking his limitations, which fans should appreciate. While he doesn’t take part in the more action driven sequences, he is able to jazz up the film with some fun one liners and banter. His charisma shines through and he really makes the most of his key scenes here, delivering entertainment. Of course, his costars shoulder most of the heavy lifting and that’s to be expected, but Willis fans should find some entertainment here. The cast also includes Lochlyn Munro, Johnny Messner, Miranda Edwards, and Hunter Daily.
