Story: The narrative here is supposed to be John Holmes as a weed dealer who hooks up with his clients, but to be honest, there’s zero plot involved here. I know some will claim the storyline isn’t the point, which is fair, but so many of the adult films from this era had more than sex scenes to offer. So if you want a wacky plot about a weed dealer with an extra large unit, you’ll be disappointed by the plot, but the extra large unit is indeed here and the movie offers a number of hookups. But still, this could have been so much more memorable with even a paper thin narrative to follow between sex scenes.

Entertainment Value: As there is no storyline whatsoever here, Smokin’ Mary Jane turns out to be more like a patchwork of various short reels. There is some dialogue, but its hard to make out and I didn’t find too much entertainment in those instances. The non sex scenes are infrequent and often quite brief however, so you won’t have to content with them much. Since there’s no plot, it seems more like random scenes anyway and the real focus is on the naked antics. Those scenes are plentiful and make up most of the nearly hour long duration, so there are several couples and even some more group minded activities. But aside from the presence of John Holmes, there isn’t much to make this worth a special look. I wanted to like it based on Holmes and the weed dealer premise, but sadly the end result doesn’t match the advertising on this one.

John Holmes is the lone reason to check out Smokin’ Mary Jane, since there’s no plot, minimal production values, and passable, but forgettable sex scenes. So at least you know Holmes and his impressive rod will deliver, which indeed happens here. I will say that Holmes is more of a featured performer here than the usual lead, as he isn’t in all or even most of the sequences. But he is present and does what the audience wants to see him do, so at least that part of the promotional advertising was true. He isn’t given much to do aside from the sex, so don’t expect to see much personality or acting skill, but he nails the part, to be sure. I also like that Holmes is credited as “Guy on Couch,” which is probably the best part about Smokin’ Mary Jane.
