Story: Not much of a narrative in Race Arcade, as you just get behind the wheel and try to outmaneuver the competition. In truth, there’s no story to this one whatsoever, so don’t expect a story driven career mode or some such. As the title suggests, this is all about the races and that’s all.
Entertainment Value: Race Arcade is a top down race game, evoking memories of the good old days of simple, back to basics race games. You just choose your vehicle, then you’re on the track and facing off with your rivals. The main mode here is career mode, which challenges you to battle it out over a series of races and earn the most points, ahead of various AI controlled racers. You can choose between easy, medium, and hard career paths, with the number of races and AI skill increasing with each successive step up the ladder. But you are rewarded for pushing your skills, as you can earn a lot more coins in the tougher stages of the career mode. Those coins are then cashed in to expand your stable of vehicles, you can purchase new cars, motorbikes, and yes race fans, even alien spacecraft. The best part of unlocking a new class of vehicle is that career mode offers different tracks for each type of vehicle, so you can wind up with dozens and dozens of assorted tracks.
This is a simple game, so it needs to nail the basics and thankfully, Race Arcade has sharp, precise controls on the track. Some of the vehicles are easier to handle than others, but there’s consistent, responsive controls in all cases, so when you lose, you know it was your fault, not the controller. I do think the simple approach could divide players, as some will appreciate the basic, but well polished gameplay, while others will long for a more in depth experience. But I do think the wealth of tracks and various classes of vehicles help add some much needed depth. You also have to consider the price, as you can’t expect a full tilt race experience at this price point. I think the devs have more than delivered in terms of overall value here. The graphics are solid, but not all that memorable. The top down view doesn’t show off a lot of detail, but the visuals are colorful and fun to watch. I had fun with Race Arcade and if you want a simple, pick up and play race game, this one is worth a look.
