Plot: A manned mission to Mars has seemed like science fiction, but the first crew to travel to the red planet has now returned. The mission was mostly smooth, aside from a brief loss of transmissions that lasted a few minutes. Patrick Ross (Justin Lazard) was one of the crew members and as the son of a powerful senator, he is given much of the fanfare, despite there being others involved. Patrick was the one who gathered samples and unknown to him and everyone else, he was infected by some alien DNA and once he is back, strange things begin to happen. His sex drive goes through the roof and when he has sex with women, they’re instantly impregnated and within minutes, give birth to human/alien hybrids. At the same time, Dr. Laura Baker (Marg Helgenberger) has been able to create a clone of Sil, known as Eve (Natasha Henstridge). Great care was taken to lower her biological impulses and keep her isolated from men, but she can sense Patrick and the two have an innate bond and desire to mate. Can Patrick be stopped or will his hybrid offspring soon overrun the world?
Entertainment Value: The original Species was a fun b movie with a very hot naked alien chick, as well as a sci/fi horror narrative that developed interesting characters and scenarios. In Species II, the focus shifts from that character development to embrace the b movie elements, ramping up the sex and violence. The story follows an astronaut who is infected with alien DNA and wants to bang out every woman he sees, while Eve is in her lab prison, desperate to ride him like there’s no tomorrow. I love the shift in tone, as I am a great fan of rampant nudity, alien sex, and horrific birth explosions, but I can see how some would prefer the more straight forward sci/fi horror approach. This shift also comes with a leaner overall movie, with a tighter pace and shorter duration, so the movie rarely slows down. This all comes at the expense of narrative, but there’s enough of a skeletal story here to keep the film afloat. I have to admit I missed seeing Natasha Henstridge out on the prowl, but mixing up the alien menace does keep things fresh and a manwhore hybrid is a fun concept. In the end, Species II is all about sleaze over substance and of course, I am more than fine with that. I think this is a fun, brisk b movie that gives fans of the genre just what they want. So if you’re a fan of b movie sleaze or sci/fi horror, it is well worth a look.
Oh yeah, this one has nakedness. In an early scene, we have our male hybrid the center of a threesome with ample naked flesh involved. This is just the start however, as breasts and bare asses abound, from strip clubs to romantic married people sex to rape in a grocery store parking lot, and beyond. While it takes a while for Henstridge to get naked, it is worth the wait and she more than delivers. The sex scenes aren’t graphic, but are a step past what most mainstream movies had on offer around this time, so they’re a little sexier than most. The bloodshed is enhanced this time around as well, with some cool effects that splash the blood around. The birth scenes are wild, with the babies bursting out and the camera never shies away, so we see it all. A lot of tentacle type mayhem and someone gets stabbed with a pitchfork, because why not, right? The creature effects and makeup work are quite good in most scenes, though some cringe inducing CGI does creep in from time to time. The dialogue is passable, but aside from infrequent one liners, not much stands out. In terms of craziness, the escalation in sleaze adds some fun, not to mention the instant impregnation and explosive births, womb tentacles, and Bubba from Forrest Gump getting cock blocked by federal agents. Not a fully off the rails b movie, but it has some bright spots of wackiness.
Nudity: 5/10
Blood: 5/10
Dialogue: 1/10
Overall Insanity: 3/10
