Plot: In a fight for his life, a samurai named Yoshimitsu (Hiroshi Fujioka) tries to fend off his enemies and protect the love of his life. But a cowardly act by his foe results in his love being killed and Yoshimitsu himself falls into icy waters. He is presumed dead, but Yoshi is actually frozen in the ice and trapped in suspended animation. Four hundred years later, his frozen body is discovered by some hikers and send to America. There a team of doctors attempt to do the impossible and bring Yoshi back to life. The procedure works and Yoshi is alive once again, but in a world much different than the one he knows. This leads to difficulties and when someone tries to steal his swords, Yoshi cuts the man down and escapes the hospital. On the run in a world he doesn’t understand and unable to communicate, Yoshi finds himself in trouble with local criminals. Can Yoshi survive in this new world or will his old ways cost him his life?

Entertainment Value: This low rent 80s movie is like Death Wish samurai style, but it doesn’t push things enough to be as good as it could have been. The story is fine, a guy is frozen for four hundred years, wakes up and kicks ass in a new, strange world. If the focus would have been on action, Ghost Warrior could have been epic. When it does unleash Yoshi, the movie is fun and has some memorable scenes. But for some reason, it never embraces that aspect of the story and as such, it drags at times. I still think Ghost Warrior is solid, but it has a lot of unfulfilled potential. The cast is acceptable, with the token Japanese guy, the funny old black guy, the heartless corporate guy, and of course, the heart of gold woman. I wish Ghost Warrior would have went full B movie and upped the action and sleaze, as this could have been so fun. As it is, the movie is middle of the road, but it does have some nice moments.

No naked ladies. The movie has a few cool scenes of bloodshed, but not as many as it should. The story worries too much about the mediocre narrative when action and bloodletting would have added so much entertainment. But we do get to see some nice slashing wounds and a fun hand removal. When the blood flows, it looks good and is fun to watch, but it doesn’t happen often enough. The writing is meh and not in a goofy, fun way, just forgettable. On the crazy scale, the premise is out there, but the movie is grounded and doesn’t try to push the concept at all. Ghost Warrior is watchable, but man, what a missed opportunity.
