Plot: Martin (Laurence R. Harvey) has a miserable life, haunted by mental, emotional, and sexual abuse. He works as a security guard at a parking garage and has no social life outside of his mother, who seems to hate him. Martin’s father is in prison for the abuse he visited on his son, a situation that has Martin hated by his own mother. In this horrific existence, Martin has one outlet, his complete obsession with the movie The Human Centipede. He watches it over and over, taking notes, collecting clippings, and fantasizing about the female stars. Martin channels his obsession into real life attacks on people he encounters, brutally assaulting them and imprisoning them in a large, abandoned warehouse. He seeks to pay tribute to his obsession by creating a twelve person human centipede, complete with one of the actresses from the movie. With no medical skills and a rapidly declining mental health, will Martin see his twisted mission through and if so, what will become of those within this new centipede?
Entertainment Value: The original film in this series sparked a lot of attention, but some genre fans thought it failed to fulfill the sadistic promise of the concept. In The Human Centipede 2, the director seemed intent on silencing those claims. This sequel drops the tense atmosphere and gives us a unique, unnerving lead whose mere presence on screen is enough to make some viewers squirm. We are taken inside this tortured man’s world for the first hour or so, as he suffers abuse and then returns it to others. We watch as his fragile existence breaks apart and he burns down what little life he once had. Then the last half hour sees him forge his obsessive tribute and yes, this sequel certainly ups the ante on the torture porn. If the end result is better or worse than the original is objective and really, doesn’t matter. This movie creates an absolutely unforgettable character that sears himself on your mind, a perfect storm of actor and role. As a torture porn picture, The Human Centipede 2 gives genre fans all could want and more.
The centipede subjects are naked most of the time, but there’s not really a lot to be seen beyond the asses. A few scenes involve topless girls and Martin’s prosthetic penis can be seen in one scene, but otherwise, its just group asses. But that prosthetic penis scene is a classic, though. On the blood front, oh yeah. The film is littered with scenes of bloodshed, some off screen, but a lot right in front of us. The first hour has a good amount, but the last thirty minutes ratchets up the carnage. Amateur surgery has never been shown in such detail and with such a roller coaster of emotions from the one inflicting all of the harm. The movie has some memorable lines, most of which come at the expense of Martin, who has little to say for himself. As for insanity, Laurence R. Harvey’s performance alone merits the full score, but there are plenty of other crazy things to witness in this one.
Nudity: 3/10
Blood: 10/10
Dialogue: 3/10
Overall Insanity: 10/10
