Plot: The case against a powerful mafia boss is about to be dismissed, as the witnesses keep turning up dead. The FBI is down to one final witness and if he can’t make it from Los Angeles to New York in 48 hours, the mob boss will walk free. Tired of the questionable protection given to the previous witnesses, the agents bring in an outsider known for his unorthodox methods, Jesse Crowder (Fred Williamson). Crowder was thrown off the force for his reckless tactics, but he knew how to get results. Crowder picks up the witness and they begin the long journey, after Crowder has an intimate encounter with a beautiful blonde, of course. The pair soon face an endless assault from mafia hit squads, who seem to know exactly where to go to find their targets. This leads to chases, shoot outs, and of course, wild brawls. With an army of mob goons and a chain of attractive women in the way, can even Crowder save this crucial witness?
Entertainment Value: Death Journey was produced, directed, and starred in by genre icon Fred Williamson. I think when he was pitching this movie, Williamson just told investors he would kick ass, seduce women, and never button his shirt. The movie starts off slow, but ramps up and the last half is a lot of fun. A scene where Crowder battles some mafia goons in a rocky desert area is so awkward you have to love it. The scene drags and has no continuity, but Williamson’s dead serious demeanor makes it work. His performance is basically him trying to be a stone cold badass and while it doesn’t always work, it is always fun to watch. The rest of the cast is fine, though only a couple other actors have any kind of significant screen time. Once things start to get going, Death Journey is a pretty fun movie that Williamson fans won’t want to miss.
Aside from a strange sex scene that will make you feel like you’re having a stroke, there’s no naked women in this one. And since she is naked I am going to score one point, but really you can’t see what the hell is going on. You do get to see Williamson’s wang tucked into tight yoga pants, so there is that. The blood is limited to a couple nice gun wounds and a couple other non graphic kills. There are a plethora of fight scenes however, each precious and a blast to watch. He might be a badass, but Williamson’s fight choreography is pretty much the opposite. I loved the fights, but wow these guys miss by a country mile and still sell it like death. Fun shit! There is a lot of great lines as well, with Williamson providing the lion’s share. His pick up lines and insults to his enemies never fail to entertain. This one is pretty grounded outside of the loopy fights and Williamson’s performance, but still offers more than solid entertainment. Aside from the slow start, Death Journey is consistent fun.
