Plot: Lester Bacon (Don Barrett) has run his slaughterhouse for decades, but his love for the old ways has cost him dearly. While other plants switched to more modern methods, Lester fell behind the times and resents the machine driven approach. After he falls behind in taxes and refuses to sell, he is notified that the property will soon be foreclosed upon. Soon after, Lester’s hulking, slow witted son Buddy (Joe Barton) sees some local teens agitating his pigs and takes action. When Lester finds the dead teens on meat hooks, he scolds Buddy, after all there are more deserving victims. This sparks Buddy’s path of rage where he slices and dices through those who wish to shut down the plant or really, anyone who crosses his path. As the bodies pile up, Lester and Buddy get more consumed by blood lust and insanity. Will anyone survive this manic murder spree or will Buddy’s spree be cut short?
Entertainment Value: Who doesn’t love a big ole redneck on a killing spree, right? If you’re a horror fan and you don’t know about Buddy Bacon, you need to rethink your life choices. This is a fun, well made slasher picture that has that wonderful 80s texture and Southern flavor. Buddy is what drives Slaughterhouse and Joe Barton’s performance is both endearing and psychopathic. He is so happy as he murders these people, you can’t help but root for the big lug. Barton and Barrett are able to give us grounded, real people who turn into sadistic killers and that is a fun ride to take. The rest of the cast is fine, with some 80s tropes like the “too cool for school” guy, who you can’t wait to see slaughtered. I think the story does what it needs to and is able to inject some dark humor and not lose the sadistic tone when it needs it. Just a fun and popular slasher movie that genre fans have kept alive for decades for good reason.
A lot of beautiful 80s talent on showcase, but none of them get naked here. A love scene for poor Buddy could have added so much emotional depth…or least we’d get to see some tits. This movie has a reputation for generous bloodshed and while the body count is solid, the gore is mostly implied. We see some sprays and spurts of the red stuff, but most of the killings happen off camera. I’m sure this was a budget issue and some folks will always claim the imagination is more powerful than special effects, but of course we are horror fans and we want to see the carnage. Not to say Slaughterhouse is violence free, as there is an above average amount of blood here. Just not the kind of blood bathed madness some have claimed. There are some choice lines in this as well, especially from Lester Bacon and who doesn’t love Buddy’s wild squeals? This is a pretty standard slasher, but gets a little more insanity score thanks to Barton and Barrett, who provide wild performances that put things a little more over the top.
Nudity: 0/10
Blood: 5/10
Dialogue: 4/10
Overall Insanity: 4/10
